Dokku in 2026: What Changed This Year

A steady stream of updates from Dokku is only reassuring once you know what kind of updates they are. The changelog is the place to find out, and the reading is simple: fixes that close old complaints mean your future bug reports will land somewhere; a run of shiny additions with the same known issues still open means they probably will not. Since the vendor publishes this record voluntarily, it is the rare marketing artifact that doubles as evidence, read it before deciding.

Any figure you remember for the hosting & deployment space has a short shelf life, since plans get restructured through the year; the live number on the product's own page is the only one worth planning around. Since Dokku is listed as free in the hosting & deployment space, shift the question from what it costs to what it collects: an account, your data, or a dependency on parts that may not stay free, so confirm the current terms on the product's own site before you rely on it.

Market position is the context that makes Dokku's individual choices legible: features that look arbitrary in isolation usually make sense once you see which corner of the hosting & deployment space the product is defending. Here that corner is marked by self-hosted-paas and docker, and the practical question follows directly: is a specialist on that ground worth more to you than a generalist that covers it adequately alongside everything else? Specialists tend to win when the job is central to your week and generalists when it is occasional, decide which describes you before you decide between tools.

The community around a hosting & deployment product is a fair proxy for its future: an active one means faster answers, more shared workarounds, and a product less likely to be abandoned quietly. Look for whether people are still arriving rather than only long-timers talking to each other. There is active community discussion of Dokku on Noizz worth reading alongside this analysis.

The honest outlook for Dokku rests on things you can check rather than guess: whether it is still shipping, whether its free pricing has held, and whether people are still arriving in its community. Re-check those before each renewal, a product's direction changes faster than any written review can track.
