How to Migrate Away from Wix

Nothing else in this process matters if the copy step gets skipped, so before touching a single setting in Wix, get your data out and store it under your own control, a local drive, your own cloud space, anywhere that is not the product you are about to leave. People rushing for the exit routinely omit this, and it is precisely what turns a botched migration from a recoverable annoyance into a permanent loss.

What you can get out of Wix, and in what format, decides how painful the rest of this is. Export before you cancel anything, access to your own data often ends with the subscription. Check the product's own export or data-download page for the formats it offers, and pull the widest, most open one available rather than a format only it can read.

The figure that decides most of these comparisons never appears on a pricing page: what the move itself costs you in time and rework. Because Wix is built around website-builder and small-business, a rival that scores well elsewhere may still cost more in rebuilding than it saves. So decide with a task rather than a spreadsheet: run one real piece of work through your leading candidate from start to finish, and watch for the third or fourth step, which is where a promising design-creative tool usually shows its friction. The alternatives and side-by-side pages here go deeper on named rivals once you have that shortlist.

• Squarespace, All-in-one website builder for small businesses and creators
• Inkscape, Open-source vector graphics editor, fully local
• WriteFreely, Simple, private blogging. A clean writing space without the noise.
• Adobe Creative Cloud, Adobe subscription creative software suite
• OBS Studio, Open-source streaming and recording software, no account required
• Webflow, Visual, no-code website builder for production sites

Run the import as a rehearsal before you run it for real: pick a small slice that represents the whole, the awkward records as well as the tidy ones, and bring only that into the new design-creative tool first. Inspect how it landed, fix the mapping while the volume is tiny, and only then commit the rest, because a structural error at full scale is expensive to unwind and trivially cheap to catch on a sample.

Before you close the Wix account, verify rather than assume: counts match, the items you actually rely on opened correctly in the new tool, and nothing you cared about silently dropped in transit. Keep the old account alive, even downgraded, until you have used the replacement for real work long enough to trust it.
