ProtonVPN Pricing Guide (2026)

A free tier is worth judging by the first ceiling you hit rather than by the feature list attached to it, so the question about ProtonVPN is which limit arrives soonest at your real volume: storage, monthly runs, seats, or how much you are allowed to export. Its freemium structure means that ceiling exists and has been placed deliberately, so go and find it early instead of meeting it the night before a deadline. Test it against one complete assignment at the length and file size you actually submit, on the vpn work you picked it for, because a real piece of coursework finds the limit that an hour of reading a plan comparison never will.

Before comparing ProtonVPN's tiers, write down your actual numbers, how much you would use it, how many people would touch it, what you need it to hold, because a plan table only answers questions you bring to it. Matched against real usage, most tier decisions collapse to a single constraint, and the plan that clears that one constraint at the lowest price is almost always the right choice regardless of what the higher tiers advertise. How the steps are spaced follows from its freemium model; what each step costs today is a fact that lives only on the product's own pricing page, so verify there rather than from anything cached or quoted.

Ask what the invoice looks like in month three rather than month one: per-seat add-ons, usage overages, and annual-versus-monthly framing are where the real total hides, and none of them makes the headline of a pricing page. Freemium means the product has already decided which limits should push you to pay; ProtonVPN's free tier is worth exactly what those limits allow at your volume, so test them against real usage and read what each upgrade unlocks on the product's own pricing page.

Value in a paid step is subtraction, not addition: its worth is measured by the constraint it deletes from your week, so skip the count of features a tier lists and ask which single limit it removes, because the cheapest tier that removes yours is the right one. Freemium means the product has already decided which limits should push you to pay; ProtonVPN's free tier is worth exactly what those limits allow at your volume, so test them against real usage and read what each upgrade unlocks on the product's own pricing page.

Most comparisons are won on the good day and lost on the bad one, so build this table around what happens when something goes wrong. Four columns are enough: what each option costs as your usage grows, how you get an answer when you are stuck, how you get your work back out, and what happens if the price changes. Score ProtonVPN honestly on all four alongside its vpn and privacy strengths, since strengths are what you notice first and these are what you live with. A vpn & privacy tool that is second-best on features and predictable on all four often wins in the long run.
