Definition
A North Star Metric (NSM) is the single metric that best represents the value your product delivers to customers. It serves as the primary focus for the entire company, aligning all teams around improving this one number.
A good NSM has three properties: it reflects customer value (not just revenue), it is a leading indicator of revenue growth, and all teams can influence it. Revenue itself is usually not a good NSM because it is a lagging indicator and does not capture the value exchange.
Examples: Airbnb (nights booked), Facebook (daily active users), Slack (messages sent per org), Spotify (time spent listening), Shopify (merchant GMV). Each captures the core value exchange between the product and its users.
Why It Matters for Founders
The North Star Metric creates organizational focus. When every team understands how their work contributes to one central metric, alignment happens naturally. Product, engineering, marketing, and sales all row in the same direction.
Without an NSM, teams optimize for local metrics that may not contribute to overall business health. Marketing optimizes for signups (but they don't retain), product optimizes for feature usage (but they don't convert). The NSM ensures everyone is optimizing for the same outcome.

Real-World Example
Airbnb's north star metric is "nights booked" because it captures both supply (hosts) and demand (guests) delivering value. Slack uses "messages sent," Spotify uses "time spent listening."
