Definition
Headless architecture separates the backend (content management, data storage, business logic) from the frontend (user interface, presentation). The backend exposes APIs that any frontend can consume, enabling maximum flexibility in how content is displayed.
The headless approach is most common in CMS (Contentful, Strapi, Sanity), e-commerce (Commerce.js, Medusa, Saleor), and search (Algolia, MeiliSearch). It allows teams to use modern frontend frameworks (React, Next.js) while leveraging specialized backends.
Headless differs from traditional "monolithic" architectures where the backend and frontend are tightly coupled. In a monolithic CMS like WordPress, the content management and display are in the same system. In headless, they are independent services.
Why It Matters for Founders
Headless architecture gives development teams flexibility to use the best tools for each layer. This results in faster, more customizable frontends while leveraging purpose-built backends. For startups, headless enables rapid iteration on user experience without being constrained by backend limitations.
The trade-off is increased complexity — you are now managing multiple systems instead of one. Headless works best for teams with frontend engineering expertise that need custom user experiences.

Real-World Example
A headless CMS like Contentful stores content via API, letting developers build custom frontends with React, Next.js, or any framework. The content backend is "headless" — no attached presentation layer.
