In Geneva, the business banking decision is shaped by the local mix — service businesses, e-commerce, agencies, and increasingly software companies that operate without ever needing a branch.
Fees
Bank of America’s fee schedule rewards customers who hit specific balance and activity thresholds. Mercury’s structure flips that: $0 monthly is the default, and the paid Plus tier ($35/mo) buys additional features rather than waiving a fee that exists by default.
Customer service
Both banks have responsive support on paper. The real-world difference, in my view, is that Mercury’s support is built around the assumption that the customer wants to self-serve in software whenever possible, while BoA’s support is built around the assumption that the customer will eventually walk into a branch. Pick the one that matches how you actually work.
Rewards
Rewards is the section of this comparison I hold the strongest opinion on. The CFPB’s 2023 order against Bank of America cited withholding of credit-card rewards as one of the practices behind the $250M total in penalties and restitution. My own experience as a BoA customer aligned with the pattern of expected rewards not crediting; I describe it on my story page. Mercury does not run a rewards program in the same shape; what you get from Mercury is structural cost reduction, not a rewards layer to chase.
Public record on BoA rewards practices: see the CFPB 2023 enforcement order ($250M total), which cites rewards-withholding among the practices addressed.

My take for Geneva: if your business is software-driven, e-commerce, or services with no cash component, Mercury’s structure wins. If you need physical branches, take BoA seriously but read the public record on fees and rewards before committing.
