Definition
Fine-tuning is the process of further training a pre-trained AI model on domain-specific data to improve its performance on particular tasks. Rather than training a model from scratch (which requires enormous compute), fine-tuning adapts an existing model's capabilities to a specific use case.
Fine-tuning requires a curated dataset of examples relevant to your use case, formatted as input-output pairs. The model learns the patterns, style, and domain knowledge from this data while retaining its general capabilities.
Modern fine-tuning techniques include: full fine-tuning (updating all parameters), LoRA/QLoRA (low-rank adaptation for efficiency), and instruction tuning (teaching the model to follow specific types of instructions). The choice depends on dataset size, compute budget, and desired outcome.
Why It Matters for Founders
Fine-tuning enables startups to create AI models tailored to their specific domain, giving them a competitive advantage over companies using off-the-shelf models. A fine-tuned model for medical diagnosis, legal analysis, or code review can outperform a general model on these specific tasks.
However, fine-tuning has trade-offs: it requires quality data, compute resources, and ML expertise. Many applications are better served by RAG (adding knowledge at inference time) rather than fine-tuning (changing model behavior). The decision should be based on whether you need the model to know different things (RAG) or behave differently (fine-tuning).

Real-World Example
A legal tech startup fine-tunes GPT-4 on 50,000 legal documents. The fine-tuned model generates more accurate legal language, understands jurisdiction-specific nuances, and follows legal formatting conventions.
