Definition
A Decentralized Autonomous Organization (DAO) is an entity governed by smart contracts on a blockchain, where decisions are made through token-holder voting rather than traditional corporate governance. DAOs aim to create transparent, democratic, and censorship-resistant organizations.
DAO governance typically works through proposals and voting: any token holder can submit a proposal, and token holders vote to approve or reject it. Smart contracts automatically execute approved proposals, reducing the need for trust in any individual.
DAOs range from protocol governance (MakerDAO, Uniswap) to investment DAOs (The LAO), social DAOs (Friends With Benefits), and service DAOs. Treasury management, contributor compensation, and strategic direction are all decided through on-chain governance.
Why It Matters for Founders
DAOs represent a fundamentally new organizational model that eliminates traditional management hierarchies. They enable global coordination without centralized control, opening possibilities for community-owned protocols, investment vehicles, and creative projects.
For founders, DAOs offer a way to build community-owned products where users are also governors. However, DAO governance faces challenges: low participation, plutocracy (large token holders dominate), and slow decision-making. The model is still evolving.

Real-World Example
MakerDAO governs the DAI stablecoin through token-holder voting. MKR holders vote on interest rates, collateral types, and protocol upgrades — no CEO or board required.
