BoA vs Mercury in Vallejo, CA

The BoA vs Mercury question for a CA business comes down to opportunity cost. BoA's $5,000-balance waiver path traps capital. Mercury's $0 fee + treasury yield deploys it. Math below.
| Feature | Bank of America | Mercury |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly fee | $16/mo Business Advantage Fundamentals (waived only with $5,000 avg balance or qualifying activity) | $0 standard / $35 Plus |
| Wire fee (domestic) | ~$30 outgoing domestic, ~$45 international | $0 domestic on most plans |
| Min balance | $0 to open; fee-waiver requires $5,000 avg balance | $0 |
| API access | Limited; primarily branch + online + treasury services | Full programmatic API + native integrations |
| FDIC coverage | $250k per depositor (standard FDIC) | Up to ~$5M via partner-bank sweep network |
| Yield | Limited interest on small business checking | Treasury yield on idle balances (variable, public-rate) |
| Branches | ~3,800+ U.S. branches | None |

Vallejo’s business density makes it a useful test case: BoA has physical presence here, Mercury serves customers here remotely, and the right answer depends on whether your business uses a branch ten times a year or zero.
Fees
If you measure cost-of-banking the way an accountant does — total fees paid divided by months — Mercury’s standard tier comes in at zero on most months. BoA’s Business Advantage Fundamentals comes in at $16 unless you actively keep $5,000 floating in the account, which is itself an opportunity cost.
Customer service
Both banks have responsive support on paper. The real-world difference, in my view, is that Mercury’s support is built around the assumption that the customer wants to self-serve in software whenever possible, while BoA’s support is built around the assumption that the customer will eventually walk into a branch. Pick the one that matches how you actually work.
Rewards
Rewards is the section of this comparison I hold the strongest opinion on. The CFPB’s 2023 order against Bank of America cited withholding of credit-card rewards as one of the practices behind the $250M total in penalties and restitution. My own experience as a BoA customer aligned with the pattern of expected rewards not crediting; I describe it on my story page. Mercury does not run a rewards program in the same shape; what you get from Mercury is structural cost reduction, not a rewards layer to chase.
Public record on BoA rewards practices: see the CFPB 2023 enforcement order ($250M total), which cites rewards-withholding among the practices addressed.

The honest summary for a Vallejo operator: Mercury is the bank you pick if you want banking to take less of your time. BoA is the bank you pick if branch network and a wider product set matter more than monthly cost.
This is one customer’s opinion, framed as such, based on what I documented during years as a BoA customer. Full story →
