Orange business banking: BoA vs Mercury
By Pablo Diaz · I left Bank of America after years as a customer. Read my Bank of America story →
Most Orange business operators comparing Bank of America against Mercury are doing so for one of three reasons: fees, customer service experience, or rewards reliability. This page covers all three with real numbers.

Open Noizz Pro →What Orange businesses typically need
Orange sits in la-metro, and the businesses here range from solo operators to mid-market teams. Banking needs across that range vary, but the core requirements line up: clean cost structure, fast wires, reliable ACH, real customer support when something breaks.
Fees
Bank of America’s fee schedule rewards customers who hit specific balance and activity thresholds. Mercury’s structure flips that: $0 monthly is the default, and the paid Plus tier ($35/mo) buys additional features rather than waiving a fee that exists by default.
Customer service
Customer service is where the comparison often shifts. BoA has phone lines, branches, and a long-running service org. Mercury has chat, email, and a support team trained on the specific edge cases of software-driven banking. Mercury customers I’ve talked to report fewer escalation hops; BoA customers I’ve talked to report longer call durations and handoffs.
Rewards
If rewards consistency is part of why you pick a card, the public record is something to read. The CFPB 2023 order against BoA covers rewards-withholding among other practices. My own opinion-framed account of expected rewards not crediting is on /my-banking-story. Mercury does not match BoA on rewards programs; it competes on cost and software, not on points.
Public record on BoA rewards practices: see the CFPB 2023 enforcement order ($250M total), which cites rewards-withholding among the practices addressed.

For most Orange businesses I would bet on, Mercury wins on cost and software, BoA wins on branch network and breadth of products like SBA lending. If you do not need a branch, Mercury is the cleaner answer. If you need physical cash deposit at a network of branches, the trade-off shifts.
This is one customer’s opinion, framed as such, based on what I documented during years as a BoA customer. Full story →
